How to remove a background on a Mac.
Your Mac can do this natively — three ways, no subscription required.
Since macOS Ventura, background removal ships inside the OS — the same Apple Vision engine the subscription websites wish they were. The three methods differ mostly in ergonomics.
1Quick Action (built in)
- Right-click the image in Finder.
- Quick Actions → Remove Background.
- A new PNG appears next to the original.
Genuinely good and free — if you remember it exists three submenus deep, and don't mind the automatic copy naming.
2Preview (manual control)
- Open the image, show the Markup toolbar.
- Use Instant Alpha to select the background, then delete it.
- Export as PNG.
Fine for tricky images where you want to steer the selection by hand. Slow for batches.
3Rename with RenameTo
- Rename portrait.jpg to portrait.nobg.png and press Return.
- Apple Vision runs on-device; the transparent PNG replaces the file in place (original backed up).
- Batch by renaming many files at once.
Same engine, rename-driven interface: the output lands where you typed it, with the original backed up first.
nobg is the Quick Action with a memorable name and batch superpowers — and because it's a rename, the output is already named and placed correctly instead of spawning 'Image copy.png'.
